justin bong auto biography

I was born in LA, California on the 14th of January, 1991. I stayed in LA as a baby and moved to New Jersey after our car got shot at during a gang crossfire. My parents told me that I was asleep and slept through the whole shooting. I then stayed in New Jersey till 9/11 and moved to korea. I was able to see the twin tower smoking and burning from my school. When I moved to Korea, I was extremely upset with my father's choice of moving here. I lived in Bundang and went to Seoul International School. I started failing all my classes which resulted in a gpa of 0.067. I feel that, as stupid as it may sound, it was one of my "great" achievements in life. However, during my 6th grade year in SIS, I got expulled and came here to TCIS. I've been here ever since.

Tyra Banks Show portrays the life of "White" racists

Surfing through YouTube I found a clip of Tyra Banks Show portraying a family of white racists. The parents were teaching their children about Adolf Hitler as being their leader and savior. They wanted their children to believe that the perfect humans are the ones with blonde hair and blue eyes. Their house was covered with the swastika sign and the only toys that the children had were toy guns, army uniforms, fire crackers, and more. The Tyra Banks Show showed us that the family didn't actually think that they were doing something wrong. They thought that they were doing the right thing 0f believing and following Adolf Hitler and someday leading the world to perfection. It was sad to see the family because they thought that they were the ones that could be the messiah and help the people live in a perfect. I was surprised that there were actually people that still followed Adolf Hitler.

The Internet Effect on Racism

Currently there are numerous issues about racism in the internet. The internet, being everyone's favorite for researching all kinds of stuff, spreads racism in a lot of ways. Recently, in CNN.com there has been an article posting of Obama portrayed in a poorly way. The biggest reason being black. Racism affects a lot of people in different ways. since the internet is used by everyone in the globe, calling a person or a society for being a different kind of person (racist) becomes a global issue that everyone knows. Like this article I have found in the internet, the Obama case has already been featured to almost every country in the world. It has probably affected Obama, presendential candidate, in a hurtful way.

Racism in Movie (Glory Road)

The movie, Glory Road, deals with a Texas Western College’s basketball team which had to recruit African-American players due to lack of funds. The conflict comes from the fact that no college basketball team in Southern states had more than 1 black player in the team during 1960’s. In Texas Western College, Don Haskin, the coach of the team, recruited seven black players. Despite other’s underestimation; Texas Western College was very successful by winning the NCAA championship and by having an impressive record. Yet, the team had to go through serious discriminatory incidents, such as beating, getting things thrown at before the game, and having racial slurs written at hotel walls. The more the team was successful, the more hatred they received. Therefore, there was a one incident where the black players tried to quit playing, however, the coach’s emotional speech bring the players together to win the championship.
The advantage that this movie gets from its medium is, resembling that of Crash’s, the showing of emotion. Being not only a movie dealing with inter-racial issue, but also a sports movie, Glory Road successfully depicts that emotional moment of playing sports, facing racial problems, and winning the championship. While watching the movie, the audience feels like they are actually there watching each basketball game and watching the players overcome one of the most serious issues of that era.

Racism in Movie (Crash)

Crash, an Oscar winning movie released in 2004, deals with various racial discriminations between different groups of people in Los Angeles. USA is a racially diverse country comprised with Asian, African American, Jewish, Hispanics, Caucasian, etc. Therefore, racial discrimination has always been a serious issue in USA. There were riots, war, hate crimes, and many other incidents solely caused by hatred toward the other race. The movie, Crash, shows numerous disputes between people with different race due to ignorance, stereotype, excessive pride, and hate. By watching this movie, you can experience, indirectly, the racism that may affect you.

The medium that is used to send this movie’s message to the world is movie. Movie works perfectly, because racial discrimination can be a dramatic issue that may not be explained with words. Some emotions are best described with the tension created by actors’ action or background music, which can be both shown in the movie. If this was written in magazine article or a book, it will not have been able to send the same emotion that the producers of this movie tried to show the world.

Effect of Music on Racism 2

I found this song that is about how police always seem to manipulate and treat African American with disrespect even though they are innocent. The song is sang by N.W.A and the title is "F**k the Police". Some of the lyrics are "They have the authority to kill a minority" and "thinking every n*gga is selling narcotics." As it can be seen in the title, the song is very violent and the lyrcis are also very violent. This song quite rounds up what many African American thinks about the way polices treat black people. The music violently shows its expression on this issue, but I fear that many who listens to this music would think that every police are that way.
Music is a good medium for expressing racist issue because music has its unique ability to convey feeling and promote certain feeling. As this song shows, music can be used as an effective propaganda tool.

Effect of Music on Racism 1

Here's a link to a rascist music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LzzKdC7_Zg. This is a video of Amy Winehouse singing a rascist song about African American and Asian. Amy Winehouse was in drug during the video, but the fact that she's a well known musician is a problem in this video. The lyrics are explicitly racist and many viewers would be prone to believe that being a racist isn't a big deal. As seem from the comments about this video, some comments are extremely racist and supports being a racist. As a celebrity, what they act and say can become a big effect to the public. Although Amy Wineshouse did apologize afterward, it already affected worldwide people. Music is an effective tool for attention of the public and this song is extremely controversial in its content. Therefore, I believe that musicians should be more careful when they write their songs.

Media Reflection- Erica Chang

The most influential media I find is using the internet. We can find anything on the internet including current events, entertainment, games, etc. Instead of using an encyclopedia, people can use the internet to find anything they desire. Internet is a global network and so, by using the internet I feel like I am closer to global issues and global standards.
The other type of media that I think is influential is the newspaper. The newspaper is simply like pieces of paper that contains the news and announcements of each day. The newspaper is mostly very accurate in details and so people can gain a lot of knowledge just by reading the newspaper. I feel that reading the newspaper helps advance a person’s grammar and vocabulary.
Both the internet and the newspaper are great sources of media that help influence people. They are both used for great researches and used for variety of reasons.

Media Reflection -Chun Han

The form of media that influences me the most is the newspaper. In this comtemporary time, many would treat the newspaper as an obsolete form of mass media, but I believe that newspaper is one of the few mass media that is trustable and accurate. I read the newspaper almost daily and it often molds the way I see the world and think.

The reason I am affected by newspaper more than any other form of media is because I get in contact with newspaper daily, newspapers are permanent, and it's accurate in its articles. In terms of range of effect, internet would hold the power, but as we often realize, many internet sites are not trustworthy and often proves to be fallible. Newspaper, on the other side, is often verified for its accuracy, which is why I find myself leaning toward newspaper for information. For example, when I have to find information about political issues or international issues, the first source that I use is my prior knowledge that was obtained from the articles in newspapers.

Internet

The media that affects me the most is internet. As a high school student, I spend a lot of time researching for information in internet. Moreover, when I am not researching, I surf in the internet to look for information that I am interested in. In my opinion, internet is the combination of all the media. Nowadays, you can watch television; listen to radio, and read newspaper or magazine in the internet. It may not affect everyone in this world, since not everyone knows how to use the internet or cannot afford a computer. However, for me, internet is the source of most of things I know.

Yet, it is surprising to know how much internet can be inaccurate. For example, I used to believe that Wikipedia was very accurate, then, I learned that I was wrong. A lot of work in Wikipedia was done by non-professional writers, therefore, resulting in incorrect data and information. This affected me, since some things that I thought was right were wrong. Therefore, internet can affect me positively by providing me knowledge that I do not know, yet, it can affect me negatively by providing false information.

Mass Media Definition

Mass media is a form of media that is able to target wide ranges of audience. Due to the wide range of effect, mass media is one of the most effective form of communication that affects people's thought and perception of the world. Examples of mass media is the newspaper, tv, radio, magazine, and recently the internet. The most effective type of mass media would be the internet due to the quickness of communication and the fact that everyone from every part of world can get in contact.

Media Reflection- Minyong Chung

The media that affects me the most is internet. As a high school student, I spend a lot of time researching for information in internet. Radio

Radio is a part of media that is used to broadcast sound through sending radio waves to transmitters.

Alongside television, radio is another huge part of media. Since there are many genres in radio, depending on the style of music the stations broadcast, radio possesses a large audience. Before television, radio was the major media for broadcasting. Even nowadays, radio still is the major media people uses to gain information or get entertained. Also, it is easy to target specific group of audiences. For example, people in 50's are not likely to listen to hip-hop radio, while people in teens are not likely to listen to country music.

Yet, there are some downsides of radio. When listening radio, people do not always pay close attention to it. Therefore, radio stations might not be able to pass on all the messages they were planning to pass. Furthermore, people cannot refer back if they missed something.

Television

Television is a part of media that is used to broadcast images through sending radio waves to transmitters.

As television was invented, it became a huge part of the media. Most homes in America have one or more televisions, as well as other homes in developed countries. One of the advantages televisions is that it is very visual. By using color, sound, and motion, television can easily send messages through audiences around the world. Moreover, this advantage leads to another big advantage of television. Since it is easy to send a specific message, television can be used to target certain group of people easily. Therefore, it can be said that audience for television can be anyone, making it a great medium for advertising.

Profile

My name is Minyong Chung. I came to TCIS 8 years ago as a 5th grader. I enjoy playing any sports, listening to music, and playing instruments. My goal after graduating is to go to a decent university and major in business, criminal justice, or sport medicine. Those choices came from my dislike toward math in high school. Although I don't think that I am bad at math, I never enjoyed math throughout high school, therefore, I realized that math is not my strength.

Since I spent a long time at TCIS, I experienced many things that I will remember forever. There were many ups and downs that I had to go through both physically and emotionally, yet, I think I have gained more then I have lost.

Newspaper Media

Newspaper is a form of print media along with magazines. In recent years, the growth of internet, tv, and radios have been influential, but newspaper has still retained its popularity among many people. It's no wonder that many people treat newspaper as the most trustworthy media.

Newspapers are distributed daily so it reaches large variety of audiences. Unlike tv and radio, newspaper tends to be permanent, which is why it is still an influential mass media. Although the rapid growth of internet seems to threat the existence of newspaper, it's not likely that it would take over newspaper. Newspaper has been the main form of media for many years and although internet is becoming ever more convenient, the fact that newspaper is delivered daily, and the fact that still many ages of people prefer newspaper can't be dismissed. Furthermore, the form of dignity that newspaper has obtained as the most reliable source of communication is the advantage that newspaper has over other mass media.
